64 bit version

Hi Hugo
How difficult would it be for you to release a x64 Windows version of Hiawatha?
Not that it's critical but x86 systems are disappearing so you could think of a x64 release

Hiawatha version: 8.5
Operating System: seven

I'll keep this in mind for the 8.6 release.

It seems that gcc under Cygwin, which is used to compile Hiawatha for Windows, does not support 64 bit compilation.

Does mingw w64 helps?

UWIN(Unix on Windows) has 64-bit native support starting with version 5.0, more details at

One of the Cygwin's author, had mentioned an alternative called UWIN, stated that "Its single biggest advantage over Cygwin32 is probably its more complete support for the UNIX security model." in section "9. Proprietary Alternatives" ( The paper of UWIN is available at

UWIN is currently open-sourced and licensed under EPL-1.0, which is incompatible with the GPL but with some exception (

UWIN's overview is available at, and downloadable at However, at the first time of download, an authentication box would appear, then the "Cancel" botton pressed, the username and the password are at the end of the license page. There is also a navigation frame at the left-hand side, sub-menu would appear after click, which contains some helpful information.

I'll take a look at it, but no promises yet.

Thanks Hugo !
This is not critical for me but I am guessing more and more users will look for a x64 version going forward.
MinGW-w64 which is a GCC for both x64 & x86 Windows may require less work than the UWIN solution but we leave it to you to assess.
