I use FreeBSD myself. Fortunately, Hugo's tarball to download from his site
SHA256 (hiawatha-8.1.tar.gz) = bcff4869542d5b04c06909c93496df29b0138d3580c3c7b87f4f43b036ede8e7
shoud build out of the box. I use 8.2-RELEASE-p6 and it works just as fine as the 7.8.2 both on port 80 and 443. No issues.

P.S. You may have a look at www.freshports.org to find out the maintainer for the FreeBSd port.

Don't ask me... but sometimes there is a reason for not upgrading to the latest version.
